ABOUT THE COLLEGE

Greater Vancouver College (GVC)
Greater Vancouver College offers high-quality, personalized English courses; it can not only satisfy the different needs of learning English, but also help many new immigrants overcome the language barrier, thus helping them to adjust to the new living environment quickly. At GVC, we provide our students with ample opportunity to practice what they study in class, through our Language Partner Program and our Activities Program.
LOCATION

Greater Vancouver College is located in the Metrotown Area, which has the largest shopping center in British Columbia. In this area, the Metrotown skytrain and bus station are the hub of the Greater Vancouver Regional District's (GVRD) public transportation system. All the
major bus routes connect to this station and it is the central stop for the Skytrain route. Our school is only minutes away from Burnaby Public Library, Bonsor Recreation Centre, Central Park, and Metrotown Shopping Mall. With construction ongoing, the Metrotown development will be the site of more than twenty movie theatres, four supermarkets, several colleges, dozens of restaurants and hundreds of shops.

GOOD REASONS FOR CHOOSING GVC
  • Government Recognized School
Greater Vancouver College (GVC) is a registered Private College. International students can apply for a student visa from Canada Immigration.

  • High-Quality, Customized English Courses
Greater Vancouver College offers high-quality, personalized English courses for international students. On the first day of school, all students are tested for their English aptitude, interviewed, and then assigned to the appropriate level of study. In the General Language Program, there are eight levels, ranging from beginner to advanced.
  • Small Classes
Students at GVC are placed in small classes (8-12 students per class), and as a result enjoy personalized attention from our highly-trained teachers. Teachers discuss student progress weekly, so students always know where they are, and what they need to work on.
  • Professional Instructors
All teachers at GVC are professionally trained, highly experienced, and hold university degrees. They are all certified in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), and have overseas teaching experience. Like a closed neighbor, teachers will try their best to help the students at all time.

  • Courses Start Every Month
It's easy to enroll at GVC. Courses start every month, and in some cases, students can register as little as one week in advance.

  • Language Partner Program
GVC is one of the only schools to have a staff person designated to pair up our students with Canadian Language Partner Volunteers. What our Language Partner Program Coordinator will do is match you up with a compatible Language Partner (that is, someone who enjoys the same sorts of things you do).
  • Student Feedback
At GVC, we want input from our students about how we can improve our school, so we regularly ask them to complete questionnaires which we use to assess our performance.
  • Location
GVC is located in the Metrotown area of Burnaby, where the largest shopping center in British Columbia is to be found. It is skytrain accessible, near the library, and just 15-20 minutes away from downtown Vancouver.
  • International Student Coordinators
At GVC, we recognize the importance of taking care of our students. We have Korean, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Japanese speaking coordinators, whose job it is to make our students feel comfortable in their new environment. After students complete our ESL program, they help them apply for local colleges and universities. In addition, they also will help students to acquire medical insurance, arrange homestay, rent apartments, etc.

Homestay accommodation can be arranged. The student will receive a private bedroom and 3 meals per day. GVC will assist those students who wish independent accommodation.

It is mandatory for all students to have medical insurance. It may be purchased upon arrival at GVC.

Activities
At GVC, there is never a shortage of activities for students outside of the classroom. We have an Activities Coordinator to organize events. These activities (all supervised) include ice skating, skiing, golfing, horse-back riding, soccer, movies, video parties, or even activities our students may request.

Visa Information

Visitor's Visa

When international students arrive in Canada, their passports are given a Port-of-Entry stamp which includes the date of their arrival. This is also called a "Visitor's Visa", and it is usually valid for 6 months. Students may study for any 6 months within that six month period.

Student Authorization

This is needed by students who wish to study full-time (27 hours/week) for longer than 6 months in Canada. Students must apply for this before they arrive in Canada.
They will need:
1. a passport,
2. a Letter of Acceptance from government recognized school,
3. proof of sufficient funds for living expenses,
4. in some countries, a medical examination, and
5. if the student is under 18 years old, he/she will need to submit a "Notarized Acceptance of Custodian Responsibilities" form.
A Letter of Acceptance will only be issued after payment of registration fees. Student Authorizations generally take 1-2 months to process.
